Chapter III: First Impressions in Diagon Alley
Lila, Jasper and Malus have all arrived at Diagon Alley, and Malus has become increasingly excited every step closer to Hogwarts.
“Mal, do you know what you have to buy?” asked Jasper.
Malus looked at his letter. It reads in order;
UNIFORM: First-year students will require: Three sets of plain work robes (Black), one plain pointed hat (Black), one pair of protective gloves and one winter cloak (Black, with silver fastenings).
“I have to go to a uniform of clothes store first” said Malus. Lila took Malus to the clothes store to get him his first uniform. “Mal, just go with your mother for a minute, Ill be right back, Im just going to have a look for something” said Jasper. “Ok dad” replied Malus. Jasper toddled off down the alley while Lila and Malus walked in to the clothes store called; Adas Garments & Gear.
An older lady greeted Lila and Malus at the door. “Hello there, welcome to Garments and Gear” Lila smiled back and began to tell the lady what they required while something caught Malus eyes sharply. Toward the back of the store was a girl with long brunette hair, wearing what looked to be Hogwarts Robes, similar to the kind he is purchasing, and a necklace with a golden owl around her neck. She looked to be about a year or so older than himself.
“Mal, are you ok? What are you doing?” asked Lila. Malus was in a daze, almost as if he has seen something like never before, there was almost a sparkle in his eyes. The girl turned around and caught Malus staring at her, Malus quickly turned away and pretended to look at clothing, not in realization that he was staring at ladies undergarments. The girl smiled and chuckled, Malus vague infatuation with her was not something she missed. She walked over to him. Noticing this, Malus nervousness quickly returned with a slight quiver from the bottom of his feet. Then saying to him so casually;
“Hi there, Im Lavinia” Malus turned and pretended not to have noticed her. “Oh, ah Hi, Im Beautiful… I mean Im Malus” stuttered Malus. Lavinia gave another friendly chuckle at him again. “Is something funny?” he asked her nervously. “Youre cute” she replied. Malus looked at her from top to bottom quickly. “Not very often I get checked out by a first year” said Lavinia. Malus just swallowed the question and replied with an avoiding counter question; “What makes you think Im a first year?” She smiled again, and stepped a little closer before replying with a well observed answer.
“Unless that women over there is buying clothes for her very short first year husband, and you just came in to look at undergarments, nothing at all” Malus smiled at her this time. “Ha-ha, ok you got me, my mum and dad wanted to make sure I got all my things for my first year at Hogwarts” said Malus. Lila called out to Malus; “Okay Mal, you ready? Were done here.”
“Okay mum” he replied loudly.
“Well it was nice to meet you Malus, maybe Ill see you at school, and Im in my second year, so let me know if you need any help okay” said Lavinia walking out. Malus just smiled as she left. Lila and Malus walked out of the store with a bag of clothes in her hand.
“Already making friends are we Malus, and she sounded so nice” said Lila happily. Lila kneeled down to out the bag of clothes in Malus trunk. Then jasper returned holding what looked to be a large cage. Jasper handed the cage to Malus and said; “Another birthday present from us for your first year at Hogwarts.” Malus smiled and uncovered the remainder of the cage only to see a big, beautiful white and grey owl. Malus had never seen such a beautiful animal, and it was his. He was taken aback by the sheer beauty of the animal he gazed upon. Almost in tears he hugged Jasper and Lila.
“Thanks Dad, and thanks mum” he said happily.
“Okay Mal whats next?” asked Lila. Malus looked back at the letter to check the list of requirements. It continues to list the entire collection of books for his first year, starting with; the standard book of spells (New Grade 1).
“Okay Jasper I can get all that for you, I know what to get seeing as I have done this before myself, while you and your father get your first year wand” said Lila walking away. As she went to gather the required books for Malus, Jasper and Malus headed to the wand store.
Wands today have to be made by the student by the end of their first school year, it is not possible for the student to finish their wand before the hand. Starting from the first week they will begin to learn wands craftsmanship, but in the meantime first year students must purchase a first year temporary wand to learn with.
So Jasper and Malus walked in to the wand store with the name on the top reading; Ollivanders: Makers of Fine Wands since 382 B.C. Rebuild Circa 2004. Malus looked around at the many boxes and boxes of wands. Suddenly a thud of a door closing from the back of the store as a man emerged. “Well Jasper, good to see you again said the man greeting Jasper. The man was obviously familiar with Jasper. “Hello Felix, how have you been and the store?” asked Jasper. “Cannot complain, business booms this time of year with all the first years buying their temp wands and the all the rest buying wand cores and such” replied Felix. Felix Ollivander was a descendant to Garrick Ollivander, the wand maker that sold the wands to many famous witchs and wizards such as; Hermione Granger Weasley, Ronald Weasley, and none other than the two most notable sales of the stores history; Lord Voldemort and Harry Potter himself.
“So to what can I owe this pleasure Jasper?” asked Felix.
“Its my sons first year at Hogwarts Felix” replied Jasper.
Felix looked down at Malus with the friendliest smile on his face. Malus just looked back politely and said; “Hello Sir.”
Felix opened a long brown box, marked with a 1 on the top of it. Inside was a white and black coloured wand with a handle shaped to be what looked like a dragon with the tail folding up around its back. The wand itself was coming from its open mouth, patterned with flame to give the illusion of the dragon breathing fire, it was quite an exquisite looking wand, and even Jasper had never seen one so elaborate. “Thats a wand Felix, how come you never sold me anything this elaborate?” asked Jasper confusingly.
“The wand chooses the wizard Jasper, you know my old family motto” replied Felix. Felix reached over and handed Malus the Dragon shaped wand. Malus reached out to take the wand when suddenly when he touched it something happened. The tip of the Wand lit up orange, Malus eyes began glowing like the wand, and the store itself was shaking. Glass rumbling, boxes falling, and then a strong push of powerful wind whooshes through the store blowing open the door, knocking a few by standers down outside. Lila was finished getting the rest of Malus items and saw what looked to be a small explosion from the wand store, all she was thinking was thats where her son and husband are, so she ran really fast down the alley back to Ollivanders. Then she stopped to look inside, but whence she did, she saw something very much out of the ordinary, even for the wizarding world.
Inside the store, Jasper and Felix were lying on the ground looking upward, while the rest of the people outside were all piling over to see what the commotion was all about. Malus was levitating about 5 feet above the ground, hands and legs spread apart, and the orange glowing wand in his right hand. His eyes were glowing bright orange. Jasper quickly got up and tried to pull Malus down but before he could even touch him, Jasper was shot back and slid across the room.
They could slightly hear something from Malus, he was almost chanting, but very unusual things.
“The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches ... born to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies ... and the Dark Lord will mark him as his equal, but he will have power the Dark Lord knows not ... and either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives ... the one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord will be born as the seventh month dies …”
Confused and scared by what they are seeing their son do and say, but also wondering what it has to do with Malus at all, why him.
“Felix” yelled Jasper. “What is he talking about, why is he saying those things?”
Felix just looked at Jasper and shrugged his shoulders hard. Then Malus spoke again.
“Please no don't kill him, take me, kill me instead” still in a trance above the ground, it was obvious he knew not what he was saying.
Suddenly a loud voice shouted from the wand, a loud scary voice that sounded almost evil. “ADVADA KADAVRA” it yelled followed by an electrical explosion type sound, and a women screaming. At this moment Malus eyes changed to a bright blindingly green colour.
Everyone was crouching in fear as to what they were seeing and hearing, but no one was in shock as much as Lila and Jasper, although Felix seemed to be scared, he was almost calm, almost as if he expected what was happening.
Malus began to lower to the ground, his eyes changing back to normal, and his wand stopped glowing to. He touched the ground and saw everyone staring at him, he was now very nervous, with obviously no knowledge to what he had just done, he was obliged to ask. “Why are you all staring at me like that, and dad why are you lying on the ground?”
Jasper and Felix stood up, and Lila rushing in as the sound of broken glass crumbles under her feet.
Malus looked back at the wand, and had noticed very slightly that the eyes on the dragon handle were glowing green, although they had stopped just as he looked.
“Okay Felix what the hell was that, why did you give him that wand?” asked Jasper. Felix looked at Jasper and replied with a simple yet completely obvious answer.
“The wand chooses the Wizard Jasper, its not always clear why, but I think it is clear that we can expect great things from young Malus here” Jasper and Lila looked back at Malus and didnt say another word about what they just saw. Jasper paid Felix 7 Galleons for the wand and then left the store quickly with Malus wrapped in Lilas arms. Everyone was staring at Malus, confused and scared to what they just witnessed.
